“Dangerous Wealth Tax Directly Threatens Vital Funding”
SACRAMENTO, CA — The growing coalition of healthcare, education, public safety, housing, business, and labor leaders opposed to the “dangerous wealth tax” issued the following joint statement today from California Medical Association (CMA) President René Bravo, M.D., California Primary Care Association (CPCA) President and CEO Francisco Silva, and California School Boards Association (CSBA) CEO and Executive Director Vernon M. Billy regarding the measure proceeding to the November ballot:
“The dangerous wealth tax directly threatens vital funding for education and schools, healthcare and clinics, public safety, and infrastructure projects by making California’s revenue even more volatile. That’s why so many leaders – both Democrats and Republicans – are joining us and saying NO. We look forward to ensuring voters have the facts, know the stakes, and resoundingly reject this reckless experiment in November.”
Earlier this month, CMA, CPCA, and CSBA launched a new committee to oppose the wealth tax – Californians to Protect Funding for Schools, Healthcare and Public Safety – spotlighting how the measure will exacerbate revenue volatility and shortchange the state’s core priorities and services. A new digital ad, “Common” is also running statewide, outlining the devastating impacts of the “reckless wealth tax experiment” on the state’s core priorities and services.
A broad and diverse coalition representing healthcare providers, educators, housing advocates, labor leaders, and others continue to voice concerns about the wealth tax and its potential impacts on California’s economy and state budget.
Last week, leaders from Housing Action Coalition, California YIMBY, California Council for Affordable Housing, California Housing Consortium, and Housing California joined top officials from the State Building and Construction Trades Council of California, California Conference of Carpenters, and Bay Area Council to announce their opposition to the wealth tax.
Other organizations that have announced opposition to the wealth tax in recent weeks include: the California Teachers Association (CTA), Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC), California Hospital Association (CHA), and Peace Officers Research Association (PORAC), and many more. Early polling shows voters rejecting the measure 54% to 38% – a 16-point margin – after reviewing its official title and summary.
