SACRAMENTO, CA — The No on Proposition 40 coalition continues to grow as leading Democrats in both the California State Assembly and Senate today announced their opposition to the measure, which will cost the state budget billions, damage the economy, and shortchange schools and other priorities.
The Assemblymembers announcing their opposition include: David Alvarez (D-San Diego), Marc Berman (D-Menlo Park), Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson), Gregg Hart (D-Santa Barbara), Dr. Corey A. Jackson (D-Moreno Valley), Sharon Quirk-Silva (D-Fullerton), and Blanca E. Rubio (D-Baldwin Park).
The Senators announcing their opposition include Josh Becker (D-Menlo Park), Christopher Cabaldon (D-Yolo), Henry Stern (D-Los Angeles), and Tom Umberg (D-Santa Ana).
Together, these 11 Democrats represent millions of Californians in Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange, and San Diego counties, as well as the Inland Empire, Bay Area, and Sacramento Valley.
This builds on opposition announced last month from other top Democrats in the State Legislature. These lawmakers join other prominent California Democrats opposed to Proposition 40, including Governor Gavin Newsom, former HHS Secretary and gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra, State Treasurer Fiona Ma, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, the San Francisco Democratic Party, and many others.
Opposition to Proposition 40 extends well beyond elected officials. A growing, bipartisan coalition of doctors, teachers, small business owners, community clinics, labor unions, firefighters, civil rights leaders, healthcare providers, first responders, affordable housing organizations, working families and many others strongly oppose the measure. They all warn that Proposition 40 is bad for California’s budget, economy, and future.
Leading organizations opposing Proposition 40 include: the California Teachers Association (CTA), Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC), State Building & Construction Trades Council of California, California Children’s Hospital Association, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 11, Housing California, California Primary Care Association (CPCA), California Professional Firefighters (CPF), California Medical Association (CMA), United Domestic Workers / AFSCME Local 3930, and many more. Here’s what they’re saying about the measure.
