Teachers, firefighters, carpenters, and Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California unite against “dangerous experiment”
SACRAMENTO, CA — On the heels of the San Francisco Democratic Party, Equality California, and NAACP CA/HI coming out against Proposition 40 this week, the growing No on 40 coalition today released its second ad, highlighting opposition from firefighters, carpenters, teachers, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, and both candidates for governor to this “dangerous experiment” that could “cut funding from healthcare, schools, public safety, and infrastructure.”
“California’s working people need more jobs, more investment, and more opportunities — not policies that make it harder to build and grow. This initiative will discourage investment, slow economic activity, and threaten the jobs, wages, and benefits that support union families,” said United Brotherhood of Carpenters Vice-President Pete Rodriguez. “We believe in a fair tax structure, but this proposal misses the mark.”
This ad, which is now airing statewide across television, digital, and streaming platforms, is the second in the No on 40 coalition’s ad campaign launched earlier this week. A transcript is below.
Teachers, firefighters, carpenters, and Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California all have this in common: they all oppose the so-called Wealth Tax.
A “dangerous” experiment that could cost California $25 billion in tax revenue, send good paying jobs out-of-state, and cut funding from healthcare, schools, public safety, and infrastructure.
No wonder both candidates for governor are against Prop. 40.

A growing, bipartisan coalition of doctors, teachers, small business owners, community clinics, labor unions, firefighters, civil rights leaders, healthcare providers, first responders, affordable housing organizations, working families and many others strongly oppose Proposition 40. They all warn that this measure is bad for California’s budget, economy, and future.
“It’s not every day that doctors, firefighters, teachers, and carpenters come together around a single cause, but we are all united in our opposition to Proposition 40,” said California Medical Association President Rene Bravo, MD.
Last week, lawmakers representing communities across the state announced their opposition to Proposition 40, detailing how the measure will blow a hole in the state budget, cost California billions, shortchange schools and other priorities, and undermine emergency management. This followed recent opposition from labor, education, and public safety leaders, including the California State Council of Laborers, United Domestic Workers (UDW), California-Nevada Conference of Operating Engineers, Association of California School Administrators (ACSA), and California Police Chiefs Association (CPCA).
Other leading organizations that have come out against the measure in recent weeks include: the California Teachers Association (CTA), State Building & Construction Trades Council of California, California Primary Care Association (CPCA), California Professional Firefighters (CPF), California Hospital Association (CHA), and many more.
